The MAGIC assessment™

The “MAGIC” approach to team coaching promotes shared responsibility, individual accountability, meaningful engagement, participatory action, and the formation of excellent habits, all crucial elements in building a high-performing team.
Let’s delve deeper into each stage of the “Building the MAGIC of Team Coaching” framework:
1. Mandate: In the mandate phase, the objective is to foster a shared agreement within the team regarding their collective goals. This is more than just a top-down directive; it involves open discussions, negotiations, and consensus building among the team members. It’s about establishing a shared mission that everyone understands, aligns with, and is committed to. It results in team members feeling a sense of shared ownership over the team’s goals, fostering a stronger sense of responsibility and investment in the team’s success.
2. Authorize: Authorization here means empowering every team member to take ownership of their specific roles and tasks. This phase ensures that tasks are clearly delineated, expectations are set, and each team member knows precisely what their responsibilities are. By assigning specific tasks that contribute to the common goals, team members feel a sense of accountability, which motivates them to fulfill their roles to the best of their abilities.
3. Give: In this stage, the team coach focuses on infusing energy and meaning into the team’s work. This involves connecting the team’s tasks and goals to a larger purpose or mission. When team members understand the significance of their work and see how it contributes to a bigger picture, they are more likely to feel motivated and engaged. It’s about inspiring the team and providing the emotional fuel they need to keep pushing forward, even in the face of challenges.
4. Initiate: The initiation phase is about encouraging active participation from all team members in designing and planning the actions needed to reach the team’s goals. This is where the collaborative aspect of team coaching really shines. Instead of just being passive recipients of instructions, team members are involved in shaping the team’s strategy and action plans. This participatory approach boosts commitment as everyone feels they have a stake in the team’s success.
5. Continue: The final stage underscores the importance of consistency and repetition in building effective team habits. By continuously implementing the processes outlined in the previous steps, the team begins to operate more smoothly and efficiently. Over time, these processes become ingrained habits, shaping the team’s culture and way of working. The repetitive nature of this phase is what ultimately drives the team towards excellence, transforming good practices into a standard modus operandi for the team.
